FAQs

What are the dates for Summer JAM?

Training week takes place from June 2-6.

Summer JAM takes place from June 8-August 8.

What are the hours?

Training week takes place from Monday, June 2 at 9:00 am through Friday, June 6 at 8:00 pm. All meals and lodging will be provided.

Summer JAM hours are Sunday evenings (exact time varies by week) and Monday-Thursday 9:00-5:00.

Mandatory intern meetings and devotionals may take place outside of these hours with prior notice.

Fridays and Saturdays are off days. (One weekend out of the summer will be spent on a youth retreat with the middle school-aged students).

Is this a paid internship?

As a non-profit urban ministry, Fortress is not financially equipped to pay its interns. However, we encourage interns to raise their own support by soliciting family, friends, campus connections, churches, and other individuals. We will provide a template for writing your fundraising letter and give you encouragement and guidance through the process. Through fervent prayer, past interns have been able to meet their financial needs through fundraising, and many have been able to reach our $3000 summer salary cap.

I’m from out of town. Where will I live?

Housing is provided free-of-charge to each intern when needed through the hospitality and generosity of local host families who attend our supporting churches.

Do I need a car?

You will need to find or provide a reliable method of transportation during the summer.

Is experience required?

Experience working with children, especially at-risk children, is always a plus. However, it is not required. Many past interns have discovered their passion for working with children during their internship at Fortress. If God is calling you to be a part of this ministry, we believe He will provide you with the skills you need to be effective.

Can I have time off?

We require that interns commit to the full summer schedule. Arrangements for off-time can be made ahead of time if necessary.

Can I use this internship to fulfill degree requirements?

Many interns have used their summer experience for college credit or to fulfill their degree requirements. Contact the Summer Director ahead of time if you plan on using this internship for your degree.

Interns act as the face of Fortress YDC as they interact with children and youth, parents and volunteers on a daily basis. Interns work directly with children ages 4-14 (PreK-8th grade).

Responsibilities include:

  • developing meaningful relationships with Fortress students

  • facilitating a classroom (classes include math, reading, games, art and crafts, and more)

  • modeling Christ-like behavior and love to students and volunteers

  • chaperoning weekly field trips

  • spiritual leadership among youth group volunteers

  • and leading Urban Experience, a hands-on introduction to inner-city life for youth group volunteers
